In honor of Nyx and I’s new-found online breastfeeding fame (see Buzzfeed’s 25 Stunning Images of Women Breastfeeding post – we are number 7 and number 14!), we decided another breastfeeding post was in order! If I can encourage even just one extra woman to keep at her breastfeeding relationship, or sway one more new mom to at least give this beneficial act a try, I will have succeeded. The seemingly limitless benefits for both mom and baby that come from breastfeeding (see my breastfeeding awareness and support website page for a full list!) say it all.
Breastfeeding in Indiana
Did you know that in Indiana a dismal 39.2% of babies are still nursing at 6 months old!?? And only 20.9% are still breastfeeding by age 12 months!! The highest breastfeeding rate in 2012 for babies still breastfeeding at 12 months was in Oregon at 48.7%! The great state of Oregon in fact even won an award in 2012 for their extremely successful and high breastfeeding rates! At 93 percent, Oregon ranks first in the United States for new mothers initiating breastfeeding, as compared to 75 percent nationwide.
It is my hope that by sharing the beautiful photos of my happy baby breastfeeding, blogging correctly researched and factual information about breastfeeding benefits to you and your baby, and by lending myself to anyone who needs help, advice, a person to talk to, or any kind of support at all, that I (WE) can help normalize breastfeeding images, breastfeeding in public, raise awareness, and create a network of support for breastfeeding moms everywhere in efforts of raising our state-wide breastfeeding percentage!
Remember: Indiana has specific state breastfeeding laws that protect YOUR right to breastfeed in public, and your right to breastfeed as an employee at work! Check out these specific laws and know your rights, on my breastfeeding awareness and support website page HERE!
Ignore Society – Celebrities Do It Too!
Our society’s over-sexualization of breasts has led to the uneducated delusion that breasts should be shamefully covered at all times – this hypersexualization results in lower rates of breastfeeding, whether it be shame, feelings of guilt, or simply feeling like a harlot for feeding your baby the best! Using those lovely lady lumps for their natural, biological (or “god-given” if you wish) function is worth ignoring other society’s misled opinions or views!
Just follow the lead of these famous celebrity breastfeeders!!!:
Breast Milk = Nutrients Galore!
This natural and normal testament to the wonders of the female body not only provides bonding for both mom and baby, but also provides this amazing abundance of nutrients:
60% whey protein,
40% casein protein (infection protection),
essential fats necessary for brain development,
absorption of fat-soluble vitamins,
and is a primary calorie source, fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K which are all vital to an infant’s health,
water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C, riboflavin, niacin, and panthothenic acid which are also essential to baby’s health,
lactose carbohydrates (decrease the amount of unhealthy bacteria in the stomach, which improves the absorption of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium),
As you can see, breast milk has the perfect combination of proteins, fats, vitamins, and carbohydrates. There is nothing better for the health of your baby. Leukocytes (living cells that are only found in breast milk) help fight infection. Antibodies, living cells, enzymes, and hormones also make breast milk ideal. Please note that these aforementioned nutrients cannot be added to formula. However, for those that cannot breastfeed for any reason, I’m so thankful and happy we have the science to create alternative sustenance for those who need it!!!!!
Everyone Recommends Breastfeeding….Seriously, Everyone!
Did you know that the surgeon general calls for more moms to breastfeed their babies!? Sure does. As do the American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health, and more! Basically everyone with a medical degree or adequate knowledge of science and health services recommends breastfeeding for as long as baby and mother want to!
Support ALL Moms
While my love and passion for breastfeeding is so strong that most everyone associates me personally with any online breastfeeding posts, I do want to make one thing clear: Breastfeeding is HARD, and takes a lot of dedication and time constraints. Breastfeeding is not for everyone. Women who choose not to breastfeed are amazing and I appreciate and respect them wholeheartedly. Forcing or coercing breastfeeding on someone who does not wish it or chooses other parenting styles would be just as rude, hurtful and immoral as forcing or guilting a breastfeeding woman into using formula. End the mommy wars, and support all moms – our jobs are hard enough without judgement added in.
